Do the Amazing and Donate Plasma at CSL Plasma
You can do the amazing and help save lives when you donate plasma at CSL Plasma.
CSL Plasma’s parent company CSL Behring uses human plasma to produce therapies to treat primary immune deficiencies and other rare and serious diseases. Therapies made from plasma are also used in surgery, burn treatment and emergency medicine.
The Plasma Donation Process
When you enter a CSL Plasma donation center, our staff will ask you to provide a valid form of identification, proof of residency and proof of social security number. Our medical staff will review your medical history and conduct a physical examination to verify your eligibility as a donor.
We collect plasma using a process called plasmapheresis that separates the plasma from the blood and collects it in a bottle. Upon completion of your donation, you will receive a reloadable prepaid card with a payment made in connect ion with your plasma donation. A first plasma donation usually takes between 2 to 2 ½ hours, which includes a health assessment. Later donations take about 1 to 1 ½ hours.
How Donating Plasma Differs from Blood Donation
Plasma is a component of blood. Blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, all of which are suspended in plasma. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood and makes up about 55% of it.
The most common type of blood donation is called a whole blood donation. When you make a whole blood donation, you typically donate roughly one pint of blood. It can then be transfused in its original form or separated into its components, including plasma and red blood cells. Eligible donors can donate whole blood every 56 days.
When you donate plasma, blood is drawn from the arm and sent through a machine that automatically separates the plasma from the other blood components through the plasmapheresis processes. U.S. Food & Drug Administration regulations state that the maximum frequency you can donate plasma is once in a two-day period – and, no more than twice in a seven-day period.
